Often when people think of Spain they imagine flamenco, bullfights, las tapas and the Holy Week of Seville, however Spain is so diverse and very different depending on to where exactly you are going. Here we will try to explain the most useful Spain facts, so you are prepared for your visit.

Situated in the southwest of Europe, Spain is occupying most of the Iberian Peninsula as well as the Balearic and Canary Islands. Population of Spain is 47 million people and the main language Spanish Castilian, which rest of the world simply calls Spanish, however many regions in Spain have their own language.

Spain is divided in 17 autonomous communities and two autonomous cities that are collectively known as “autonomies”. Autonomous means that each of these autonomous communities has its own executive, legislative judicial powers. These are similar to, but not the same as, states in the United States of America, for example.

How many provinces Spain have?

In Spain its 17 autonomous communities are subdivided into 50 provinces. Both Spanish cities that located in Africa Ceuta and Melilla are not part of any provinces.

Spain Borders 5 Countries. From longest to shortest borders, they are:

Portugal: 1214km

France: 623km

Andorra: 63km

Morocco: 17km

Gibraltar (UK Territory) 1km

To clear up any confusion, Spain borders Morocco due to two exclaves called Ceuta and Melilla on the Moroccan Mediterranean coast. The UK overseas territory of Gibraltar sits near the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, giving the UK a less than 1 km boarder with mainland Spain.
